I'll update this myself - I still need an answer but this might help some other poor soul out there. Sony replied 'Hey, it's already in SF 10.0'. The only problem is, they're wrong. Oh, it's IN there all right, but it's grayed out and you can't select it even if you have any audio file open. Only by downloading and installing the Noise Reduction 2.0 plugin from this site can I get around that - but THEN I get asked for a serial number. So it's a catch-22 - you can't use the Noise Reduction stuff that's 'in there' but you can't install it from the outside or you need a serial number. This is a big bug in SF 10 and if Noise Reduction is important to you I would suggest you wait until they fix this before you upgrade.

Yeah, I'm sure that was the.intent. that is, that when SF 10 was installed those tools should be activated. But, while they do appear in the menu, they obviously.aren't. activated (at least for me, running Windows XP Pro, latest version).

Sony has become mute on the issue (after responding to me almost immediately) so I can only assume they were unaware of this or somehow can't figure it out. But it's a definite bummer as I really needed those tools tonight (plus, my nervousness makes me think this might be an issue they can't resolve - they must have.surely.

tested this and yet if it only occurs for me I might be screwed). It only shows up under tools, but it's grayed out (until I installed it separately, as I said, and then it asks for a serial number). I installed and authorized SF 10, the Noise Reduction tools show on the menu but are not selectable under ANY circumstances until I went ahead and downloaded them from this site and installed them separately, but at that point they ask for a serial number. I don't know how to be any clearer - clearly they are not working properly from just an install of SF 10 on my machine.

Actually, the problem is simpler than that - when I follow the download link from my purchase and download SF10 there IS no installer per se. That is to say, I don't get a Sony splash screen offering the opportunity to install SF, choose language, or install the Sound Reduction stuff. All it does is start the install (it does ask me to choose languages). So it's a screwed up download file - lucky me, that I didn't want the physical media (hey, whatever happened to Save the Planet?) and got a f.ed up file. And I suspect I was the first (or at least the first to wonder about the Sound Reduction stuff) since Sony Support seems clueless. At this point I'm fairly confident it will get resolved - someone will have to post a proper link somewhere - but how long it will take is anyone's guess.

For now my advice is simple - don't buy SF 10 if the noise reduction stuff is important and you intend to download. At least not until they get this straightened out.

Sony Noise Reduction consists of four professional DirectX sound restoration plug-ins that can clean up your vinyl recordings and tracks, eliminating noise that has been accidentally introduced or unwanted and annoying sound sources from otherwise good recordings. To use them effectively, however, you need to know what you are doing.

Pros Great performance: Sony Noise Reduction includes Audio Restoration, Clipped Peak Restoration, Noise Reduction, and Click and Crackle Removal, all of which work as advertised. Plug-in settings: You start with the default values and, if the result is not satisfactory, you can adjust many settings. Once you are happy with the results, your custom settings can be saved for later use. Free trial: The asking price of $280 does not allow room for errors. The fact that professional tools can be freely tested is a good thing. Cons Pricey: The asking price and the Sound Forge 8 prerequisite make this professional software an unattainable dream for the casual user.

Requires experimentation: To get your job done, you may have to test out different plug-ins for the same track and spend some time adjusting settings. If you have at least some technical knowledge, it will all be a lot easier. Bottom Line If you use Sound Forge, the Sony Noise Reduction plug-ins are an indispensable addition to your set of tools. Effective and extremely useful, they are ideal for the removal of all kinds of undesired noises and diversions. Besides, they are easily tunable via comprehensive settings. It's strictly for professionals, though. Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Sony Noise Reduction 2.0m Build 596.
