Ramayan Serial Episode

Nearly two decades after regaling audiences with Indian TV’s first blockbuster, Ramanand Sagar’s clan has come up with a grander version of the epic Ramayan on NDTV imagine. In a single stroke, the TRPs of a new General Entertainment Channel(GEC) have sky-rocketed courtesy Ramayan, as the masses have whole-heartedly welcomed a refreshing change from the repetitive prototypes available on other GECs-the same old saas-bahu saga from Balaji stable, the ubiquitous and non-risible laughter shows(some are now showing even on news channels) and indeed the over dose of T20 cricket. Family show: The half-an-hour capsule served at 9:30 PM(Monday to Thursday makes for an ideal family viewing as against the other prime time programmes; what with the daily soaps being largely confined to womenfolk and the news-based programmes/ cricket action largely catering to the male audiences. Bigger and better: The Sagars had promised a grander version this time over and have kept their word remarkably.

The sets of the programme have been very tastefully designed by Omung Kumar(the same guy who used to present ‘Ek Minute’ on Zee TV about 12-13 years back) and deserves a 9/10. The casting is far superior to the one that in its earlier version and Gurmeet Choudhary, who plays Lord Rama, gets a 9/10 too, with the looks of a Greek god, smile of a mystic, gait of a warrior and speech of a saint. Though Arun Govil’s performance as Ramanand Sagar’s Ram of 1980s was very good, Gurmeet goes one step ahead of Arun Govil. Debina Chatterjee, who plays Sita, has the most expressive eyes on TV and clearly surpasses the work of Deepika(Ramanand sagar’s Sita). Debina’s non-verbal communication adds another dimension to the programme. She too gets a 9/10 for her efforts.

Actors who play the role of Dashrath, Janak and Manthra too are also first rate and have done full justice to their roles. Director Anand Sagar has managed wonderful performances from a relatively obscure cast and deserves a 9.5/10 for his work. The perfect ten, however goes to veteran composer Ravindra Jain who has made this programme a must watch with his wonderful compositions and amazing lyrics. In fact, the whole programme comes across as lyrics in action with the power of verse scoring over the dialogue.

GurmeetRamayan

Be it the Sita Swayamvar or Bharat Milap, Lakshman-Parashuram duel or Ahilya’s transformation, excellent lyrics coupled with excellent non-verbal performances from the protagonists make this serial a cut above the rest. Though some of its episodes may be influenced by Balaji soaps(like Manthra sowing the seeds of discontentment in Kaikeyi or the background music played for depiction of conflict), the serial on the whole is distinct and impressive. In an era when even Cricket’s T20 appears to be corrupting the impressionable minds with the scantily-clad cheer-leaders, Ramayan would help the youngsters appreciate the practical side of traditional family values. The only thing that could have been done better by the makers is to give the names of the cast in the credits so that the audiences may identify Gurmeet and Debina by their name and not just as actors who play Ram and Sita. On the whole: Overall, Ramayan on NDTV Imagine is an excellent programme ideally suited for family viewing and it comes with an assurance that it would not corrupt the minds of the children, rather it would make them appreciate the virtues of Indian values and traditions.
